TLDR: I need some career advice. I’m thinking about going out on my own.
I work for a Chartered Wizard in the Darnmoor Provinces. I have mastered more than he gives me credit for, and I could accomplish more on my own. I don’t want to stagnate.
It’s hard because he has been an excellent mentor. He has taken on the quest of collecting chaos relics and says their subtle influence corrupts the land. The objects are sequestered in his spire's well-warded basement. It’s well protected - I should know! Refreshing the wards is about 80% of what I do here.
We recently liberated a ruby ring from a corrupted noblewoman. We tried to reason with her, but she said the signet ring was a harmless heirloom that had been in her family for generations. She further claimed that if the chaos relics were dangerous, maybe an Archmage who hoarded the cursed items would be the most dangerous of all.
The fight was undramatic; the relic had not even attempted to defend its old master. But as I plucked it from her corpse, I felt a coldness enter my heart. What if she had been correct?
When we secured the item in our vaults, the Archmage retired to his Spire to meditate. I have been sitting at the basement door since, watching the vault door and wondering what comes next. My master is only 150 and skilled in rejuvenation magic, so he is far too young to consider a succession plan. I can’t be an apprentice forever. And besides, what if he has been corrupted by the cursed items he seeks? Indeed, they would be safer under my care.
Let me know your thoughts.
